As another year draws to a close, we are looking back at some of UCL School of Management’s many achievements from 2022, and are celebrating the tremendous hard work of our staff, students and alumni. It’s been a great year for us, so it was difficult to narrow it down to only a few, but we have compiled a list of the top 10 highlights of 2022.
95% of school of management outputs deemed ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ in ref results
In May, the Research Excellence Framework 2021 announced that the research undertaken at the UCL School of Management has been rated as ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’, placing the UCL School of Management 2nd in the UK for Business and Management.
According to the REF 2021 results, 95% of our research outputs were deemed ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’, solidifying the School’s position as a leading UK institution producing innovative and disruptive research!
professor davide ravasi appointed as director of the school
Earlier this year, we were delighed to announce that Professor Davide Ravasi was confirmed as the next director of the UCL School of Management with immediate effect for a period of five years in the first instance.
Davide took on the leadership role in July 2021 as the interim director with the aim of leading the School to contribute to important, public conversations around the dramatic transformations currently underway in the business community and in the wider world. We look forward to seeing all that Davide accomplishes in this role.
ucl ranked eighth best university in the world in qs world rankings
In June, UCL was ranked among the Top 10 universities in the world in the 2023 QS World University Rankings. For the second consecutive year, UCL has placed eighth on the prestigious list, joining other global universities such as Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Among the best-known and most-consulted university ranking systems in the world, QS is an annual publication that assesses universities based on 8 key ranking indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, and faculty/student ratio. On five of the metrics, UCL scored 98.6/100 or higher, with scores of 100 for international students and international research network – the latter score placing UCL in second place globally.
the ucl mba celebrates graduating students with first-ever completion ceremony
In May, The UCL MBA celebrated its first wave of graduating students in the programme’s first ever Completion Ceremony. Set to become an annual event, current and former UCL School of Management students were invited to attend the ceremony in London to celebrate the Founders’ Cohort, as well as enjoy 2022’s first UCL MBA Orientation and Immersion Weekend focussed on Sustainability.
Discussing the momentous weekend, the UCL MBA Director, Jim Berry, celebrates the achievements of the MBA graduates: “As an online programme, it is a great occasion to get together in person. This most recent gathering was extra special as it was an opportunity to celebrate our first group of graduates ‘The Founders Cohort’.
two school of management faculty named in Poets&quants best 40-under-40 business professors list
Earlier this year, two members of UCL School of Management’s fantastic faculty were named in the Poets&Quants Best 40-Under-40 Business School Professors list, with both Assistant Professor Yiting Deng and Associate Professor Blaine Landis featuring in this list. We were extremely proud to see the School doubly represented this year, following Professor Chia-Jung Tsay’s nomination in 2021.
Upon hearing the news, Yiting told us, “I am extremely honoured and deeply grateful for the support from my amazing colleagues and students over the years, as without them this would not have been possible.”
three school of management alumni were named in the forbes 30-under-30 list
This year, three UCL School of Management alumni were named in Forbes’ annual 30-Under-30 list. MSc Technology Entrepreneurship (now MSc Entrepreneurship) alumnus Nii Cleland appeared in the Social Impact category alongside his business, Flair, a technology company that uses surveys and other data points to measure racial bias within companies. Fellow MSc Entrepreneurship graduate Diana Florescu appeared in the Media and Marketing category after founding Grai Ventures, a Romania-based venture studio that partners with European startups and provides expertise on media, design and branding.
Also featured in the Social Impact list was Information Management for Business (IMB) graduate Dean Celaj. Dean went on to found Akademi.al in 2019, an organisation that seeks to provide equal access to high-quality education to Albanian-speaking students. In total, fourteen members of the UCL community have feautured in the list, which includes UCL staff, students and alumni.
More executive education programmes launch
This year, the UCL School of Management officially started running the first of its Executive Education programmes, which are an opportunity for managers and executives to learn from our expert faculty in the highest classroom in Europe on Level 50 of One Canada Square in Canary Wharf.
With programme subjects ranging from artificial intelligence and data management to leading inclusively and succeeding as a board member, there is a programme for every professional looking to further their career. 2022 also saw the UCL School of Management designing and executing tailored programmes to accommodate specific business needs. We are also launching some new Executive Education programmes in 2023, so be sure to keep an eye out for future opportunities!
ucl professor receives honour from the president of portugal
Earlier this year, Professor Susana Frazão Pinheiro received an honour from the President of Portugal for her services to education. On 10 June, Susana’s work was celebrated in a ceremony held in London, where she was appointed Commander of the Order of Public Instruction.
Currently the Head of Healthcare and Life Sciences at UCL and an Associate Professor within the School of Management, Susana has dedicated much of her professional life to education. She co-founded the Portugal-based Institute for Social Entrepreneurship in 2008, and has also pioneered the introduction of a number of topics into Portuguese higher education curricula across the country. Congratulations, Susana, on this incredible achievement!
four staff members nominated in 2022 education awards
Announced in June of 2022, the annual Education Awards are comprised of the UCL Education Awards and Student Choice Awards and are designed to celebrate the achievements of staff and students throughout UCL, as well as recognise their contributions to the learning community. This year, four School of Management staff members were nominated in the Education Awards in multiple categories.
Professor Paolo Taticchi received an Education Award for his contributions to sustainability and was also shortlisted to become UCL’s nomination for the National Teaching Fellow Scheme (NTS). Teaching and Learning Manager Michelle Tinsley received a nomination for the UCL Education Award in recognition of her outstanding academic support, and Research Fellow and Teaching Assistant Alina Kim was nominated in the ‘Amazing Support Staff’ category. Lecturer Alec Sanderson was also nominated in the ‘Brilliant Research-based Education’ category.
UCL PRofessor launches nft sustainability manifesto
In March, UCL School of Management Professor Paolo Taticchi launched the “NFT Sustainability Manifesto” to educate businesses and organisations on both the opportunities and environmental impacts of using NFTs. First conceived by Paolo, the NFT was created through a collaboration between NFT designer Michele Fabbro and Italian artist Massimiliano Donnari (aka “MAMO”). The NFT resembles royal influencer Queen Elizabeth II wearing a top featuring the Earth with the tagline: “NFT – use and consume responsibly”.
As traditional NFT trading models consume substantial amounts of energy and generate carbon emissions, this NFT was minted on the energy-efficient blockchain Stratisphere. The Stratis blockchain is based on Proof-of-Authority (PoA) — a blockchain design that balances decentralization with energy efficiency. Additionally, digital planting company Treedom has planted a tree with the goal of neutralising the carbon emissions associated with the digital token.
