The Sustainable Circuits Index (SCI), published by Professor Paolo Taticchi with Enovation Consulting, has found Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya to be the world’s most sustainable motor racing circuit for the second year in a row.
Second place went to Mugello Circuit, with Silverstone and Circuit de la Sarthe (Le Mans) sharing third place. Singapore’s Marina Bay Circuit was named the most sustainable temporary circuit also for the second year in a row.
The SCI is a first-of-its-kind industry benchmark ranking the sustainability initiatives of 117 permanent and temporary motorsport circuits around the world. Circuits are assessed against 21 industry-specific criteria spread across seven sustainability categories.
Professor Paolo Taticchi said: “As motorsport federations continue to demand sustainability action, it is imperative that we develop and utilise the tools available to measure the performance of industry stakeholders.
“In the 2025 SCI, circuits will find creative examples of best practice that they can compare against and emulate, alongside the competitive nature of motorsport to ascend the leaderboard. Engagement with sustainability is expected to accelerate in the coming years, and we are excited to see how this translates into performance which the SCI will ascertain.”
The data collection and analysis for the SCI were conducted by Enovation Consulting between the 1st January and 31st December 2024, guided by Professor Taticchi.
Suzuka Circuit in Japan was named ‘Most Improved’ and ‘Biggest Mover’, after moving up 37 places on the previous SCI, which was based on data from 2023.
Despite the same circuits achieving the top spots overall compared to previous years, the gap between all circuits has reduced considerably over time, indicating that more circuits are increasingly focusing on sustainability, highlighting its importance in motorsport as the industry seeks to become more resilient and innovative.
Dr Christiana Pace, Founder and CEO of Enovation Consulting said: “When I started my career in motorsport, sustainability was hardly a footnote, let alone a focus. While performance remains the focal point of motorsport, sustainability has now become a fundamental pillar. Five years ago, we created the Sustainable Circuits Index to highlight what circuits are doing in the environmental, social and governance space, using a robust methodology taken from the corporate and financial world. Today, this benchmark is helping to democratise sustainability across the industry, and is has been a refreshing journey seeing real improvement year after year.
“Without the foundational infrastructure of circuits, the very existence of motorsport would not be possible. Circuits can have a huge impact on the environment and society, and the opportunities they are presented with can lead to lasting, real changes within local communities and economic development, aside from educating fans and promoters. We have seen some incredibly innovative solutions which have been outlined in the 2025 SCI.”
