The Programme
How can you lead yourself and others in ways that foster creativity and innovation?
This programme will help you develop research-based leadership skills, knowledge, and techniques for all stages of innovative work – from generating your organisation’s next breakthrough ideas to implementing them. The course uses a mix of case-based and experiential methods aimed at improving your diagnostic acuity and leadership skills.
The impact
The programme delivers practical experience in how to think more creatively, inspire innovation in your teams and translate that into real change for your organisation. By the end of the programme, you will:
- demonstrate an understanding of how to communicate and champion new ideas effectively to stakeholders (such as upper management, clients or customers);
- be able to design innovative strategies that are appropriate for your organisation’s individual identity and context;
- know how to implement new ideas in your organisation;
- have developed your skills in coaching and facilitating others’ creativity.
Programme outline
Each session will start with an interactive element with Colin Fisher – a mixture of case discussion and lecture – followed by a laboratory session focused on either an experiential exercise or project work, where you’ll have access to coaching from your instructor.
Session 1: The ‘what’ and ‘why’ of leading for creativity and innovation
Develop an understanding of how leading for creativity and innovation differs from other kinds of leadership, and why it is so important to master.
Session 2: Constructing your opportunities
In this session, we will talk about how to think differently about yourself and your organisation, and the opportunities and barriers for creativity and innovation.
Session 3: Creative collaboration
Build your skills in leading and facilitating collaboration and teamwork, which is essential for innovation.
Session 4: Shaping the context
Your effectiveness as a leader of innovation is largely determined by how well you create the conditions for others’ success and remove the roadblocks to their creativity.
Session 5: Evaluating and championing ideas
Organisations are often designed to reinforce the status quo. Leaders need to be adept at both evaluating which ideas are worth pursuing, and championing those ideas to their colleagues to build their legitimacy.
Session 6: Using creativity and innovation strategically
Thinking about how creativity and innovation fit into your organisation’s larger strategic imperatives and goals.
Your learning environment
You will learn in-person on the highest classroom in Europe on Level 50 of One Canada Square in Canary Wharf, London. You will be taught by academics from the UCL School of Management, the business school of University College London, one of the world’s leading universities. Your peers will be a diverse group of mid-senior level executives from a range of industries, bringing a wealth of different experiences.
UCL’s strong emphasis on research and progressive approach to teaching means your programme will be based on the most up-to-date methods to encourage creativity and innovation. Once you have completed the programme you should feel confident in your ability to work more creatively by yourself, as well as inspire colleagues across your organisation to think differently and approach problems in new, creative ways.

Dr Colin Fisher
Dr Colin M. Fisher is an Associate Professor and PhD Programme Director at UCL School of Management; his teaching and research focus on how teams and individuals doing complex, creative or improvisational work can get the leadership they need. He has been fascinated by the dynamics of group interaction since his days as a professional jazz trumpet player.
Colin received his PhD in Organizational Behavior and MA in Social Psychology from Harvard University/Harvard Business School and previously served as an Assistant Professor at Boston University’s School of Management. His research has been published in leading journals, including Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Perspectives, Academy of Management Review, Harvard Business Review and Journal of Applied Psychology. His discoveries have been profiled in prominent media outlets like BBC, The Conversation UK, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, NPR, and The Times.
Dr Sarah Harvey
Dr Sarah Harvey is an Associate Professor in the UCL School of Management who studies the dynamic processes through which groups and teams engage in creative and knowledge work. She is particularly interested in how interdisciplinary groups synthesise knowledge, identify creative ideas and decide which ideas to pursue.
Sarah holds a PhD from the London Business School and a BComm (Hons) from Queen’s University in Canada. Prior to her PhD, Sarah worked for the Boston Consulting Group. Her work has been published in some of the world's leading journals, including Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Research in Organizational Behavior, and Small Group Research.

Who should apply?
This programme is suitable for mid-senior level managers working at organisations in any industry. No prior technical knowledge is required.
What are the entry requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements to our executive education programmes, however, typically our applicants will have:
- a minimum of five years' work experience
- a bachelor's degree or higher
- a good level of English (an English language test is not required for this programme, however, the programme is taught entirely in English without translation, and so you should be comfortable communicating in English.)
How can you apply?
You can apply to the programme by completing our application form which shouldn't take you more than five minutes to complete.
Once submitted, your application will be reviewed by the Executive Education Team who will be in touch to discuss your place on the programme and to arrange payment.
When do applications close?
Applications will close 10 working days prior to the start of the programme.
Fees
Fees for this three-day programme are £3,600.

Payment
Payment for your place on the programme should be made using a credit/debit card on the UCL Store. You will receive an access code for the UCL Store from the Executive Education Team once your place in the programme is confirmed.
