Programme

Embark on the Management for Social Change BSc and develop vital skills to contribute to an evolving society. Blending management, politics and social change, this degree will teach you how to lead change and champion social causes within businesses and organisations, underpinned by fundamental business and management skills. You’ll graduate ready for a successful career in the private, public or voluntary sector.

The Management for Social Change BSc was created in response to this quickly evolving global context where social change can play a key role. Studying for this degree means you will take advantage of a curriculum that covers management studies alongside social sciences, and political science. You’ll gain deep insights about how change takes place in society, so you can develop key skills to lead and participate in change initiatives.

Through management modules, you’ll learn skills in social psychology, marketing, entrepreneurship and finance, giving you core knowledge applicable to any workplace. In particular, you’ll gain a detailed understanding of how individuals and groups can be organised and motivated to work together to introduce change.

This degree incorporates political theory and social change modules too, and you’ll learn how political ideas, including liberalism and environmentalism, influence societies, and the concepts behind why social activity can spark change. Blending theoretical study with the extensive exploration of case studies and real-life scenarios, this degree builds your knowledge and experience in highly relevant subject areas.

You’ll also benefit from opportunities to volunteer and contribute directly to social change, plus design and implement your own social change project. You’ll graduate with highly sought-after skills needed by a range of employers, with the ability to work comfortably within business, political science or for social causes.

Programme Structure

This three-year degree programme incorporates topics related to management, political science and social change during every year of study.

Year 1 of the degree is all about principles, focusing on the foundational concepts in each of the key areas of the programme, including power, management, and the history of social movements. You will take eight taught modules that are all compulsory. Two of the modules explore the historical evolution of work, organisations and social movements. The Introduction to Political Philosophy module looks at the ideas and institutions that underpin society, while the Democracy and Authoritarianism module gives insights into political institutions, civil society, public attitudes and political culture. Modules on Social Advocacy and Campaigning and the Economics of Social Change look at theories of advocacy, mobilising support, and using economic motivators as drivers of social change. Modules covering accounting, business management and business analytics give you a grounding in business principles and how they can be used to analyse and manage social problems.

In Year 2, the emphasis is on the practice of social change through case studies and scenarios. During this year, you also have the opportunity to volunteer and contribute to social change. You will take seven taught modules that are compulsory and one optional module, giving you the flexibility to explore your interests beyond the core curriculum. The Responsible Leadership and Influence module explores theories of leadership and the principles of ethical and inclusive leadership. Social Enterprise and Social Psychology modules look at business models with a social purpose and the dynamics of social influence. Modules on analysing the impact of social initiatives, financing social causes and policymaking cement your understanding, while a module about volunteering examines voluntary actions as vehicles for achieving societal goals and supporting political culture. The choice of optional modules include those that focus on human resources, digital marketing, global marketing, law and other topics.

In Year 3, the final year, the focus is on the design, implementation and evaluation of your own social change project using knowledge and tools you have learnt during your degree. This may include advocacy, analytics, finance and other areas. The theoretical content in the final year moves from principles and practice to the evaluation of change initiatives. You will take four compulsory taught modules and two optional modules, plus a double-weighted research project that runs through the first and second terms. The Design Thinking for Social Impact module is a key module that teaches you transferable techniques for solving problems in an innovative and iterative way. Through other modules you’ll learn to analyse policy challenges in global governance and gain insights into global regulatory strategies. The Digital and Social Media for Change module will teach you about powerful online strategies for supporting change. Your personal social change project will enable you to explore a topic of social change that interests you, which could relate to governmental policy, organisational practice, change in people’s behaviour, or another form of change. There is a wide range of optional modules to choose from too, covering diverse topics including entrepreneurship, international relations and mergers.
