MSc Business Analytics student Kuartina Britto shares her experiences navigating the programme from a non-technical background

Embarking on the MSc Business Analytics journey at UCL School of Management without a tech background felt like diving into the deep end. But let me tell you, it’s been an exhilarating swim so far!

Coming from a non-technical background education-wise, I had my reservations about keeping up with the coding whizzes but UCL School of Management’s vibe is all about turning doubts into opportunities, and that’s precisely what my experience has been about.

kicking off with the basics

Not all of us speak Python or dream in algorithms and UCL gets that. The course kicks off with the essentials, guiding us through the maze of data analytics, statistics, and the basics of programming. It’s like learning a new language, but here’s the heads-up: it’s fast-paced. Even though it’s the basics, the programme doesn’t slow down, so the onus is really on us, the learners, to put in the effort to keep up. The support is phenomenal, but it’s on us to grab it. With lectures, resources, and a bit of grit, it becomes manageable.

the support network

The community here is nothing short of amazing. Imagine having access to one-on-one sessions not just with professors who are leading experts but also with Teaching Assistants (TAs) who are always ready to dive deep into any topic or problem you’re stuck on. The TAs are like the secret superheroes of our learning experience, often providing that crucial link between complex concepts and our understanding of them. Alongside the workshops that demystify the techiest stuff, and a cohort of peers from all walks of life ready to team up and tackle projects together, the support system here is solid gold. It’s this blend of formal support from the faculty and informal help from fellow students that makes the learning curve a lot more manageable and, honestly, a lot more enjoyable

Networking and Exposure

Another aspect of the programme that stands out is the emphasis on networking and industry exposure. UCL School of Management arranges guest lectures, company visits, and networking events with alumni and professionals from the analytics field. These opportunities are invaluable. They not only broaden our understanding of where our skills can take us but also help us build connections that can be crucial for our future careers. Hearing firsthand from people who are applying business analytics in diverse fields—from tech giants to startups, from finance to healthcare—inspires us to think beyond the classroom and consider the vast possibilities our skills can unlock.

Looking Ahead

Looking at where I started to where I am now, I’m amazed at the transformation. The course doesn’t just equip you with the tech skills; it reshapes how you view business problems, making you a sort of bridge between data and decision-making. And with UCL’s strong ties to the industry and a dedicated careers team, I’m excited (and way more confident) about jumping into roles that blend tech with business strategy post-graduation.

Wrapping Up

So, to anyone from a non-tech background considering the MSc Business Analytics programme at UCL School of Management - yes, it’s challenging. Yes, it’s a steep learning curve. But it’s also incredibly rewarding, fun, and downright transformative. You’ll come out not just as someone who ‘gets’ the tech but as a strategic thinker ready to make waves in the business world. And trust me, if I can do it, so can you!
