Management Science alumnus Owen Chen talks analytical career at Barclays

Since graduating from UCL School of Management’s BSc/MSci Management Science programme, Owen Chen has launched his career in investment banking, joining Barclays as an Analyst in the Energy Transition team. Working on high-profile mergers, acquisitions, and financing transactions in the natural resources and infrastructure sectors, Owen is already contributing to some of the most dynamic changes in the global energy landscape.

We recently caught up with Owen to learn more about his current role at Barclays, how our Management Science programme helped prepare him to prepare for his fast-paced career in finance, and his advice for students navigating the competitive graduate job market.

tell us about yourself

I studied BSc Management Science at UCL and have always been interested in finance, problem solving, and building businesses. Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, fitness, and trying new experiences.

what do you currently do at barclays?

I am an Analyst in the Energy Transition team at Barclays. My role involves working on mergers and acquisitions and financing transactions, focusing on companies in the natural resources and infrastructure sectors. I build financial models, prepare client presentations, and support execution of live deals.

what have been your career highlights so far?

Highlights include working on high-profile transactions in the energy sector and collaborating with senior colleagues and clients on complex projects. I’ve also enjoyed being part of a strong team culture where I learn every day.

do you think that the bsc management science programme prepared you for your role at barclays?

Yes, absolutely. The programme’s mix of quantitative skills, teamwork, and real-world applications gave me a strong foundation to step into investment banking.

how were your experiences of the graduate job market and what advice would you give to graduates?

It was challenging and competitive, but I found that resilience, preparation, and networking were key to eventually securing the right role.

Be curious, build strong technical skills early, and don’t hesitate to reach out to alumni and professionals for advice. Persistence and adaptability go a long way in such a fast-paced industry.
