Graduated from University College Dublin in 1969 with a First in Experimental Physics. Joined IBM Ireland from University as a programmer/analyst. Assignment to IBM’s International Airlines Support Centre as a programmer, operating system developer and systems programmer. Transferred to IBM UK in 1974 and worked until 2009 as systems programmer, technology consultant, IT Architect and troubleshooter. Elected to the IBM Academy of Technology in 2000 and appointed IBM Distinguished Engineer in 2001. Appointed Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor (part time) in 2012, working across engineering disciplines, mainly Computer Science and School of Management
