Course overview

The module is aimed at developing knowledge and skills in the application of software engineering skills for managing large data sets. This will address shortcomings of traditional software engineering and Data Science and Analytics modules in the ability of students to manipulate large data sets and to extract value from the data. This module will allow students to improve their software engineering and analytical skills by being able to learn techniques and tools for managing data sets that exceed the ability to manage on a single computer and distribute the data and the processing across multiple collaborative computing nodes.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:

· Appreciate the limitations of single node processing and resources when working larger data sets

· Evaluate and interpret data processing strategies accurately and appropriately

· Understand options for scaling and processing large datasets

· Explain and critically evaluate how to create effective and efficient data pipelines

· Critically evaluate alternative choices for platforms that support building Data Intensive solutions

· Evaluate and interpret the relevant technology trends and implementation option
