Course overview

This module aims to give students an up to the minute understanding of innovation in the Financial Services Sector, especially in the context of emerging technology applications (AI, DLT etc). Fintech is accelerating change in all areas of our personal and professional financial lives. This course combines a theoretical understanding of major areas of financial technology innovation, with regard to both incumbents and disruptors, with practical exercises, experiences, and interactions. Participants will not only gain an understanding of the fintech ecosystem, but also be able to utilise business models and innovation frameworks for applications of technology to the financial services industry. This involves understanding the key players and stakeholders, history, trends, regulation, business models, disruptive technologies, the resources available to enable and accelerate new entrants, and the process and strategies needed to be successful.

To understand key areas and their applications within Fintech, such as: Money, Banking, Payments, Lending, Crowdfunding/Investing, Wealth Management, Insurance, Cryptocurrencies, Cybersecurity, Identity and Regulation

Be able to map out and explore the Fintech ecosystem and understand what/who the drivers of change and innovation are, and their significance and potential consequences

Understand and evaluate how fintech startups are disrupting incumbent players

Explore and assess the impact of emergent technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, Distrusted Ledger Technologies and Biometrics on the Fintech landscape

To be able to analyse and develop strategic recommendations for a fintech disruption or innovation
