The module aims to equip students with an understanding of what data is, why and how it is converted into information and used as business intelligence to drive business strategy and business decision making. The module will cover sources of data, how that data is managed and cleansed to provide the basis for business intelligence. It will cover traditional sources of business intelligence as well as Big Data, Open Data and Business Intelligence in the Cloud. Students will use commercial tools for discovery and visualization of data and will gain an appreciation of the ethical and legal issues around data privacy.
Upon successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:

- Understand how to integrate company data with data from the Internet to derive insights
- Research International Standards, legislation, policies and procedures for managing business information;
- Apply techniques, technologies, processes, and applications to identify, extract and analyse internal business data, information and processes for effective decision-making and strategic, tactical, and operational insights;

- Evaluate and select appropriate approaches to conducting a business intelligence project.

50% is awarded on the basis of examination result of an unseen 2-hour paper in the Summer Term. 50% is awarded for two pieces of coursework (one individual coursework and the other group coursework).
